Uganda’s participation in the IUCN Leader’s Forum
Hon. Beatrice Anywar, Minister of State for Environment was in Geneva 11-13 October 2023 as a Guest Speaker at the IUCN Leaders Forum 2023.
The IUCN Leaders Forum is an annual global forum that focuses on moving the new Global Biodiversity Framework into action. The theme for this year’s forum is “Global goals for nature: tracking progress, financing success”.
Purpose of the Meeting
- To join global leaders and changemakers from across sectors to discuss the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
- To network with government, civil society and private sector leaders and changemakers.
- To showcase leadership by making measurable commitments to implement the global goals for nature.
- To build collaboration with global leaders and changemakers to strengthen collective action for nature and climate priorities.
Hon Anywar pointed to how financing and resources can best be connected to successful conservations outcomes for the planet. She further expounded on Global Biodiversity Framework targets and how the “30X30” ambitions provide the scope and the scale of what is required to meet the unprecedented level of resourcing by Government and Society.
The Ministr highlighted the need of integrating the nature and climate agendas through practical exploration at the policy levels, the nature and climate agendas, beyond Nature Based Solutions; Global Biodiversity Framework on the road to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, COP28 in November 2023.
The Minister paid a courtesy call to the Permanent Mission; in attendance was the Permanent Representative, Ambassador Marcel R. Tibaleka, Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Arthur Kafeero; Mr Allan Ndagije and Mr Milwen Owaro. The discussions focused on environmental impacts arising from climate changes the role of Uganda and the international community on mitigation. Issues on climate credit and climate trade was discussed in depth along side a mention by the PR on the Mission and its mandate.
